  • Osteoarthritis :-

    Also known as sandhigata vata in Ayurveda, a chronic degenerative disease which progresses as the cartilage between the joints starts degrading. A cartilage is a soft cushiony structure between the bones which provides lubrication to the joint and prevents friction between the bones. As it degrades it causes friction between bones and leads to pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis can affect almost any joint, although it occurs most frequently in the hands, knees, hips, and spine.

    Signs and symptoms :-
    • Pain during activity
    • Swelling of the joint
    • Joint stiffness
    • Creaking of the joint
    • Loss of mobility of the joint.

    Factors causing Osteoarthritis :-
    • Old age
    • Repetitive overuse related to professions like athletics, standing for a long period of time etc.
    • Injury to the joint
    • Hereditary causes
    • Muscle weakness
    • Obesity
    • Genetic deformity of the cartilage
    • Irregular sleeping pattern
    • Irregular food habits

    Ayurvedic management :-
    Osteoarthritis can become a crippling disease. Ayurvedic treatment helps to reduce pain, maintain mobility,assures an active life and also herbal medicine retard the disease progression.

    Ayurvedic management includes medication, massages, hot fomentation, diet correction, exercise and panchkarma.

    Medication :-

    Massages (Also known as snehan) :-
    Gentle massage over the affected joint with Antarth ointment & Liniment to improve blood circulation, provide warmth and relieve pain.

    Hot fomentation (Also known as swedan) :-
    Heat relieves pain and stiffness in arthritic joints. Hot fomentation can be given with hot packs, hot water bottles, heating pads etc as per the convenience. Heat should tolerable and should be applied for not more than 15 minutes.

    Recommended diet :-
    Food that should be favored should be moist, lubricating, nutritive and have tissue building potential for eg. Wheat, barley, green vegetables, corn, milk and milk products, ghee, fruits etc.

    Recommended lifestyle :-
    • Over exertion should be avoided.
    • Avoid cold and chilly places and food.
    • Avoid bathing with cold water.
    • Junk food should be avoided.
    • Proper exercises should be done.
    • Being awake late in the nights should be avoided.

    Yogic Exercise :-
    Yoga exercises improve flexibility and strengthen the muscles surrounding the joints. Regular exercise also helps in alleviating pain and leading an active life.

    Asanas that can be practiced under expert supervision are :-
    • Pawan muktasana (wind relieving pose)
    • Vajrasana (mountain pose)
    • Tadasana (tree pose)
    • Bhujangasana ( snake pose)

    Panchkarma :-
    It is an important aspect of treatment of arthritis in Ayurveda .For osteoarthritis various kinds of medicated oils and decoctions are released in the body through enema which help release toxins and delay disease progression.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis :-

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory condition which can affect many tissues and organs throughout the body, but mainly affects the joints.

    The onset, severity, and specific symptoms of this condition can vary greatly from person to person.

    Symptoms of RA :-
    • Shifting pain in the Joints
    • Morning stiffness of the Joints
    • Lack of Taste
    • Thirst
    • General Weakness and fatigue
    • Feeling of Heaviness
    • Mild Fever
    • Pain and swelling in the affected parts
    • Constipation
    • Indigestion

    Dietary changes :-
    Food that should be favored is Old Rice, Butter Milk, Ginger, Garlic, Wheat, etc. Consumption of curd, Sweets, Oily foods, Chinese Food, Junk and Fast Foods, Salty and Sour Foods, Cold Drinks and Ice Creams should be avoided as they are heavy to digest.

    Life Style Modifications :-
    • Avoid cold breeze, cold water and cold food.
    • Bathing with cold water should be strictly avoided.
    • Warm water bath is favored.
    • It is also advisable to take a gentle walk after consumption of food. Sleeping immediately after meals should be avoided.
    • Weight should be watched as obesity can aggravate the pain.
    • Avoid drinking water immediately after a meal.

    It helps in reducing inflammatory conditions in the body and reduce stiffness. Heat applied through a sand bag or a salt bag is preferred. Also steam can be given on the affected parts

    Exercise is beneficial in people with RA as it can build endurance and strength, preserve muscle and normal joint motion, minimize bone loss, and improve pain control. Moderate exercises should be practiced as per a person’s capacity. Anything that aggravates pain should be avoided.

  • Cervical spondylosis :-

    Cervical spondylosis is a cause of neck pain which happens due to age-related wear & tear of the vertebrae and discs in the neck region. The supporting muscles, ligaments, and nerves may become irritated by these degenerative changes causing various symptoms.

    Symptoms of Cervical spondylosis :-
    Symptoms can vary from mild to severe. Symptoms flare up by over-use of neck, or due to sprain in the neck muscle or ligament.

    Symptoms include :-
    • Pain in the neck. The pain tends to flare-up from time to time which can later develop in chronic pain.
    • Some neck stiffness, particularly after a night's rest.
    • Headaches from time to time.
    • Numbness, pins and needles or weakness may occur in part of the arm or hand or even base of the skull.

    Factors causing cervical spondylosis :-
    • Old age
    • Trauma
    • Incorrect posture of the body
    • Using very high pillows while sleeping
    • Excessive intake of sour and dry food

    Massages (Also known as snehan):-
    Gentle massage over the affected area for 10-15 minutes with Antarth ® ointment & Liniment to improve blood circulation, provide warmth and relieve pain.

    Hot fomentation (Also known as swedan) :-
    Heat relieves pain and stiffness in arthritic joints. Hot fomentation can be given with hot packs, hot water bottles, heating pads etc as per the convenience. Heat should be applied for not more than 15 minutes or the temperature should be set as per your need.

  • Lumbar spondylosis :-

    Lumbar spondylosis is a degenerative condition which affects the lower spine as the space between the discs in the lumbar spine becomes narrowed, causing a variety of health problems ranging from back pain to neurological issues.

    Factors causing Lumbar Spondylosis :-
    • Old age
    • Trauma

    Symptoms :-
    • Pain in lower back
    • Morning Stiffness
    • Numbness & Tingling in the surrounding area
    • Unsteady gait, and other severe neurological problems
    • Spine may become contorted or compromised in later stages
